Ever wondered what the metaverse is? It’s just like our actual world but in a digital form….it is a virtual world!
A world where you can do everything that you can do right now without even leaving your house.
We all know those open-world video games, right? Where you can roam the city, perform certain interactive activities and interact with NPCs? A metaverse is exactly like that…only this time, you’ll be the protagonist!
It is like a simulation of your actual life.
The Metaverse: Origins
The idea of the metaverse has evolved over the years, but it has especially showed considerable progress in the last couple of years.
The idea first came into existence through a fictional novel by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 Novel Snow Crash. This is where the term ‘metaverse’ was first used for a virtual world.
Progress So Far…
After it’s fictional debut, there have been multiple instances of us having a glimpse of what a metaverse could look like or at least what it’s large number of features can include.
For example, in the ‘90s VR boom, the grocery chain Sainsbury’s put together a VR shopping demo. Sainsbury’s vision was to enable their customers to walk through the aisles, pick what they want, checkout with the items they want to purchase and get the items delivered on their doorstep, all while the customers are in the comfort of their homes.
In 2003, Philip Rosedale invented a virtual place called ‘Second Life’, which is by far the closest we have gotten to making the multiverse concept a reality. In Second Life, players would control their avatars and be able to interact with other players through their avatars, hold business meetings and even trade with each other through virtual currency.
A Metaverse can be entered through virtual reality (VR) or augmented Reality (AR), something which still feels like a dream. Advanced VR and AR could be the future of the technology that we need for a better world.
Conclusion
Now think about it….a world separate from your own, which you can enter and live however you want, all while sitting down on a chair in your own home.
Although there is a long way to go in VR and AR to make metaverse a reality, we can definitely hope for it to make our lives easier, better and more efficient.
